About this tree
Lebanon Cedar. Prince de Mèrode estate in Lanaken in Belgium.
It is a privately owned estate and still in the original family ownership. 4,5 hectares in size.
Founded/built around 1920 in the wooded area of Lanaken adjacent to Domein Pietersheim.
The underlying forests have been laid out for timber for the Belgian coal mines. The estate borders on a neighborhood where many supervisors and director of the regional mines lived.
The tree stock in the region varies greatly with various exotics such as American oak, Douglas fir, Chamaecyparis, tulip, magnolia, etc.

This music box has a Tree of Life on the inside.
The mechanism (for which you can choose a melody yourself) can be wound on the bottom. It plays 3-4 minutes. The melody repeats after approximately 15 seconds.
Pay attention! The box in the photos is 1 from the series. Wood drawing and color of the box that you ultimately receive will differ slightly because each box is unique!
How is it made?
This music box is a synthesis of modern technique and handicraft. After the wood (sustainable reuse of a city tree) has been carefully selected by Rob and sawn to size and planed, it is hollowed out using a router.
The box is made from 1 piece of wood! without the use of glue. After it has been eroded, it is put together by Rob and finished. (lots of sanding!) The box is treated with natural oil.
The tree information is written on the bottom of each box, as well as the month and year in which the box was made
(nice for later! often a box is made in the same month in which the child was born or the wedding or any other event took place for which the box was given)

I do not yet know the text for engraving.
For example, if you want to receive the box quickly for a birth but do not yet know the name and date of birth, it is best to order the box (with engraving, enter: 'text to be added later') in advance due to delivery time/availability. As soon as you know the text for the engraving, please email it to me. I can then usually engrave it within a few days. PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE RELOCATION OF THE WORKSHOP, I WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO ENGRAVE FROM MID-OCTOBER FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD. HOPEFULLY AGAIN FROM NOV/DEC, BUT THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEE; IT MAY TAKE LONGER.
Can I have my own logo / image engraved?
Yes, that's possible. Keep in mind that the engraving is black / white. So if a logo / image is graphic then we can usually engrave it. When a good quality file is supplied in pdf, the price is 15, -. If the file still needs editing then 10-20 euro is added. Send the file by e-mail for a quote.
Can I have multiple surfaces engraved?
Yes, that's possible. First choose the area before the first engraving and fill in the desired text. After this an option for a second engraving for another plane appears. If you want a third engraving, please contact us.
Layout of text
By default we use the font 'Gabriola Regular'. Subtle, elegant and with beautiful sleek lines, perfect for engraving. (a different font is possible on request if it is in our 'font' collection)
The layout is provided by us by engraving. How this will look depends on the number of characters and the available surface. It is therefore possible that texts with long sentences are divided over multiple lines. If you would like to have an example of this in advance, let us know.
Unfortunately it is not possible to request a different melody.
This is because I only purchase from the supplier a few times a year, and have to purchase at least 100 pieces per melody, which is expensive.
You can buy a music box without a mechanism from me and put in the mechanism that you have bought yourself somewhere else through me or yourself. Please note that the model is identical, otherwise it will not fit.

The difference is that with a manual mechanism, you have to turn the handle yourself to make the music play . This handle is always located on the side and is visible. Depending on the melody, it is silver-colored with a red ball or entirely gold-colored. A manual mechanism has 18 notes.
A wind-up mechanism plays for a few minutes on its own . You only need to wind it up; the further you wind it, the longer it plays. The winding key is located on the bottom of the box, out of sight (except for the Piccolo, which has it on the top). Wind-up mechanisms come in various versions. The smallest has 18 notes. Larger, more expensive mechanisms have 30, 36, 50, or even 72 notes.
This indicates the number of tones located on the mechanism.
To be more precise; The mechanism has a comb with teeth that are tuned from high to low. There is also a rotating cylinder with pins, the position of these pins determine the melody, and every time a pin hits a tooth, a tone is heard.
The smallest and most sold mechanisms have 18 tones. (music box Piccolo, Lude, Celesta, Robin, Tamino) There are also larger machine heads with 30 (Tamino, Calandra) and 50 tones (Orpheus, = temporarily unavailable).
You can imagine that the more tones there are, the nicer it will sound, because it is closer to the original. The mechanism also plays longer and contains a larger fragment of the original piece of music. The quality of the materials is better and so is the sound.

We use 'Gabriola Regular' as the font as standard. The text will be engraved exactly as you have specified (except for long lines that can be split). An example: If you want a date written out, enter: 2 January instead of 02-01

Quite by chance, I came across Rob's website while looking for something ecological. His video touched me, so beautiful and so much love for what he does.
This was it, a music box, with engraving. Perfect.
And the idea gradually took on a different proportion.
Every year, up to and including her 18th birthday, I will bother Rob to make a copy for our daughter, with a personal inscription.
Now she is still too small to realize it, but I think it would be nice, for when I am no longer here, that she has something tangible from mom. Who knows, maybe they will be passed on, all separately, and maybe they will all find their way back to each other, or the locations where the trees once stood are looked up.
Mama and Rob, with his wonderful initiative, will leave a small mark in the emotionality of those who are yet to come. A small gesture, with a beautiful message, in all his being. There is still beauty in this world.

In April this year I was blessed with the visit of my brother from Peru who survived cancer last year. During his trip we went to Utrecht on a weekday afternoon; there he was enchanted by the melody from Rob's studio. Unfortunately the shop was closed and we couldn't come back on the weekend. He left immediately afterwards and I was left somewhat sad. Last November I decided to travel to Peru for Christmas and I immediately knew what the perfect gift for my brother would be. I ordered the box and Rob was kind and thoughtful to prepare, engrave and care for the box before my trip. He is professional, an artist and above all a man who does his work with love.
